Review: The Joint, Brixton, London

Are you one of those people loitering around the bakery section of the supermarket? I am. I can’t resist the smell of freshly baked bread.
If you’re into that sort of thing too then you must get your ass down to The Joint in Brixton, South London. The Joint is well known for being one of the best places in London for pulled pork, but their buns, oh my their buns, are some of the most heavenly balls of doughy goodness I’ve ever tried.
The menu is simple, BBQ/Asian BBQ pulled pork or shredded/fried chicken in rolls or wraps. I went for the BBQ pulled pork bun. When they but it down in front of me, I was hit with the most incredible smell of freshly baked bread – that particular smell when the bread is all warm and you start taking chunks out of the French stick before you’ve even left the supermarket. It was like that, but a hundred times better, because this isn’t some average loaf of bread, this is a sourdough bun infused with fig and vanilla. I know. Wow.

Once I had finished sniffing the bun I pressed the contents down to make the whole package more manageable, because this meal has top potential to get messy. With every bite I was wafted with the smell of that glorious bun. Inside it’s packed with 16 hour slow cooked shredded pork, BBQ sauce, crunchy coleslaw, lettuce and hidden in the depths of all this was some super crispy apple candied bacon. It was big and blooming brilliant, and at £7, it’s a steal.

But I’m getting ahead of myself! Before all this fresh bun and porky excitement, I tried the onion rings (£3.50) and delicious slightly spicy chili riblets (£3.50), heaven.

Did I mention the bread? Those buns are freshly made in house.

The Joint is located in Brixton’s Village Market – a lively informal place to eat in South London. Whether you’re visiting London or live here, don’t leave it as long as I did to get to The Joint
